Importance Of Regular Eye Checks For Your Child From An Early Age

Undetected or uncorrected vision problems can cause children and teens to suffer academically, socially, athletically and personally.

Regular comprehensive eye exams for children

The importance of regular comprehensive eye exams for children can’t be stressed enough. School vision screening does not replace a comprehensive eye exam, and conditions which can affect learning and normal eye development may be overlooked.

All children under the age of 19 are eligible for an annual OHIP covered eye exam. There is also a special program called Eye See Eye Learn, for children in Junior Kindergarten (currently those born in 2013 are eligible), provided by participating optometry clinics. Through this program, along with a comprehensive eye exam, any child determined to need spectacles, will be eligible for a pair of glasses at no charge!

What Is It That We Do?

When performing an eye exam, we carefully inspect your child's vision. We also check the overall eye health, together with color vision, depth perception and how the eyes work together. It is not necessary for your child to know the alphabet for the eye exam. There are also other methods which enable us to do the tests.

Importance Of Early Eye Exams

For your child to achieve their full learning potential, they will need their eyes to see clearly and be healthy. At least 80% of learning comes through vision. Certain eye conditions may not be obvious, and may be easier to correct at a younger age. Routine exams are important, even when no problems are suspected.

The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) recommends eye exams for preschoolers and school-age children as well. The Eye See Eye Learn program, along with routine eye exams, can help your child to achieve their full learning potential by ensuring optimal vision and eye health.
