What causes Sciatic pain in pregnancy?

As your baby grows bigger, they may be resting on your sciatic nerve. Ouch! This nerve is the largest and longest one in your body. About the width of your thumb, the nerve originates at the lower end of your spinal cord. It splits there to run down through your pelvic area, through each buttock and thigh, and along each leg to each foot.

Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatic/pseudo-sciatic or piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder that is caused when the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve. This is often due to the changes in posture during pregnancy. The piriformis muscle is a flat, band-like muscle located in the buttocks near the top of the hip joint. ... Nerve compression can be caused by spasm of the piriformis muscle.

Baby sitting on nerve

There are natural integrative & effective strategies to help relieve sciatic pain in pregnancy and post-partum. Sciatic nerve pain is a common complication during pregnancy because the uterus rests on the pelvic floor and lower back muscles.

Massage therapy can reduce inflammation in the nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles.

A few more things pregnant women can do to relieve sciatica that do not require medication or invasive treatments are:

Resting and stretching are important

Stretching exercises for sciatica

When lying down, lie on the side of your body opposite the pain, this position may help alleviate some of the pressure on the nerve. Place a pillow between the knees while side-lying to help put the spine into a more neutral poison and take the pressure off the piriformis muscle and spine.
