Ophthalmologists, Optometrists & Opticians

At Vision Clinic, we think it's important to educate you on who is involved in the care of your eyes in Canada.

Understanding who can help you with your eyes, can help you understand where you can get the most appropriate help.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmologists are highly educated eye physicians and surgeons, and in Ontario they represent the medical leaders in the eye care.

Ophthalmologists are indeed physicians who, upon graduation from medical school, take many more years of post-graduate training in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye. They are focus in the eye and vision care, surgery and medical interventions, and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of serious eye diseases.

Ophthalmologists conduct detailed eye exams, conduct surgery, prescribe and administer eye related medication, and determine the proper prescriptions for corrective lenses.

Optometrists

Optometrists are health care providers who focus on the accurate diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease and disorders of the visual system. Their work focuses on the eye and surrounding structures as well as the diagnosis of ocular manifestations of systemic conditions. Optometrists can determine if you are near sighted, far sighted or need reading glasses.

To become an optometrist, a four-year doctor of optometry degree program typically follows a bachelor of science degree.

Opticians

Opticians are licensed professionals trained to help you see better – regardless of being near or far-sighted, or have poor vision related  to more sophisticated eye health issues.

Registered opticians are specially trained to design, fit, and dispense eyeglasses, lower vision aids, contact lenses, and prosthetic ocular devices.

Opticians also interpret prescriptions from ophthalmologists and optometrists to determine the specifications needed to correct a peoples eyesight experience.
