Supporting Caregivers in their Home: A Conversation with Joan Benik
Joan Benik, RN and Care Coordinator at Retire-At-Home Services Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge is passionate about supporting aging at home!
We sat down with Retire-At-Home Case Manager and Registered Nurse Joan Benik to find out what motivates her to work with her clients and why she chose to be a community nurse!
Q: Why did you decide to become a R.N.?
"I always knew that I wanted a career in the medical field and was unsure whether I had the stamina for medical school. I decided to try nursing because of the huge variety of career options available to a nurse and varying work places available."
"Nursing has allowed me to return to school where I received my coronary care certificate, my critical care certificate and renal nursing certificate. It has allowed me to learn and transition from a variety of roles and experiences within the health care sector."
Q: How long have you worked for Retire at Home?
"I have been with Retire-At-Home since its inception in 2010. I had previously spent most of my nursing career in acute care hospital nursing and decided it was time for a change."
"After years of acute care nursing in Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto, I found I was never seeing the transition from hospital to being able to return home in the community. I decided it was time to make a change and see what I could offer in community nursing to ensure a successful transition for seniors, adults with chronic conditions and palliative clients in the region."
Retire-At-Home Services Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge provides compassionate elder care with in-home nursing services that help seniors stay healthy at home
Q: What are the good things about working for RAH?
"I graduated nursing in 1985 from Conestoga - for 33 years I have been working in various areas of nursing."
"The last eight years have been with Retire-At-Home Services (RAH) in community nursing as a Case Manager. Working with RAH has given me the work-life balance that I enjoy and has allowed me to build stronger relationships with my clients and their families. Working for RAH has been a a whole new learning experience. I have transitioned from acute care to a more client based relationship, and I am learning the struggles and needs of the elderly and compromised within our community. Working for RAH allows me the ability to draw from years of nursing experience and apply this to the care needs of our clients. It is very rewarding, knowing that the work we do can make lie a little easier for some of the patrons in the community."
