AN INTERVIEW with PSW Carrie B of Promyse Home Care
Q & A
How long have you worked for Promyse Home Care?
"I’ve been with Promyse Home Care since May 2018....but I’ve been doing PSW work for many years."
Why did you decide to become a PSW?
"Actually, how I became a Personal Support Worker is a funny story, I had just recently married and moved from Kitchener to Oakville. One morning I had a call asking me to come in for an interview with the Red Cross Health Services. I had no idea what kind of job was awaiting me or even how they got my name. I later found out that my then mother-in-law had taken it upon herself to send my resume in to Red Cross thinking it would be the perfect job for me."
"Back in the old days we were called "Homemakers". A few years later Red Cross sent me to school to be trained as a Personal Support Worker."
"I’ve taken many courses through the years as well to keep myself updated. All I can say is that 22 years later I’m still doing it, so I guess the mother-in-law was correct!"
What are the good things about being a PSW with Promyse Home Care?
"I’ve worked for a few companies over the years but by far Promyse Home Care has been one of the best! The management team is amazing - I feel very supported and they are very flexible with my schedule. I make my own hours that work for my life, so I don’t feel pressured or overwhelmed like I have in the past."
"In the short amount of time I’ve been with the company, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some amazing people and even making some life long friends. All of the clients I’ve worked with have been lovely as well."
"I feel very lucky to have a job I love....how many people can actually say that?"
Can you give an example of what you do for a client?
"I don’t have just one client I have several, and they can change from day to day so I do all sorts of jobs for my clients. Sometimes I’m doing palliative care - I’m not just caring for the client I am also supporting the family and friends through this difficult time."
"I may be assisting my clients with activities of daily living - assisting with medication reminders, providing companionship, attending to personal care such as dressing or showers. Sometimes meal preparation, light housekeeping, shopping outings, or I even help with pet care when needed (laughs) all depending on what the client's needs are."
Personalized care means your in-home caregiver knows exactly what you need and when.
"I love helping people. I love putting a smile on their faces or making them laugh so hard tears come to their eyes."
"I feel very fulfilled with my job. When I can walk through the door and see my clients face light up then I know I’m doing something right!"
