5 Ways Random Acts of Kindness Can Improve YOUR Life!
Did you know that even the small act like opening the door for someone, saying a caring word, smiling, or giving a small gift is good for your health!
Have you ever been on the receiving end of a random act of kindness? Maybe someone helped you out of a tough situation or just paid you a compliment out of the blue. I’ve had the driver in front of me pay for my coffee as I went through the drive through, someone let me in line at a grocery store, send me an encouraging note at a time when I really needed it, and so much more. Each time it warmed my heart and made a huge difference in my day. Even better, it inspired me to pay it forward to others, helping more people to feel the same way. Did you know that even the smallest act, like opening the door for someone, saying a caring word, smiling, or giving a small gift is good for your health and overall well-being? But the benefits go further than we realize!
Here is just a sampling of what Random Acts of Kindness can do for us.
1. Inspire Gratitude
When we do something nice for someone else, it helps us appreciate our own blessings, especially when help someone less fortunate than us or someone in a tough spot. Realizing we’ve given even the smallest bit of ourselves to someone else shines a new light on just how much we have to be grateful for in our own lives. Gratitude promotes greater success in work, more energy, greater physical health, peak performance, better sleep, a higher sense of well-being and so much more. It is a definite win win!
2. Reduce Stress
According to the Random Acts of Kindness Institute, “Perpetually kind people have 23% less cortisol (the stress hormone) and age slower than the average population!” Performing a random act of kindness actually releases our feel-good, happy hormones like serotonin and dopamine. This contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness. In these challenging times we are facing, who couldn’t use a dose of happiness?
3. Improve Mental Health
According to the Cleveland Clinic, “studies show that giving can actually boost your physical and mental health.” Today many people are suffering from the emotional complications of a global pandemic. Something as simple as a random act of kindness can help improve the mental health of the giver, the receiver and anyone who witnesses the act. Research shows that our brain’s pleasure and reward centers actually light up when we show kindness and compassion, and the recipient experiences a similar response.
4. Reduce Pain and Increased Energy
It has been shown that endorphins, the brain’s natural painkiller, are released after doing something kind for someone else. According to the Good News Network, Chinese researchers recently found that “acting altruistically relieved not only acutely-induced physical pain among healthy adults, but also chronic pain among cancer patients.” When we feel less pain, we naturally have more energy.

5. Improve Relationships
Kindness is chemical. When we do something nice for another person, our brains also release oxytocin, the love hormone. We feel better AND the recipient of our act feels better, making them more likely to be kind to other people. Bonds strengthen between people who are kind to one another, leading to better relationships, lasting positive interpersonal results, and happier communities.
There are so many more rewards that come from performing random acts of kindness. Remember, no gesture is too small to generate a positive effect, and kindness is both teachable and contagious. Practice random acts of kindness, put them on repeat and pay them forward.
