Practicing gratitude as a tool for happiness has been in the mainstream for years. Even better, long-term studies support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to greater success in work, more energy, greater physical health, peak performance in sports and business, better sleep, a higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from surgery. Gratitude changes you AND changes your brain!
MOJO has been described as a magical power, that feeling of regaining your confidence, energy, or enthusiasm … sounds a lot like what happens when you practice GRATITUDE!
Like so many other tools in our lives, we all know gratitude is good for us, but that doesn’t make it any easier to maintain our gratitude practice. As humans, we are wired to notice what is broken, undone or missing in our lives. It is a coping mechanism that has kept us safe since the caveman days. For gratitude to meet its full MOJO potential in our lives, it needs to become more than just a Thanksgiving word. We have to learn a new way of looking at things, a new habit. And that can take some time.
That’s why practicing gratitude makes so much sense. When we direct our focus and attention towards being grateful for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing. I’m not suggesting we ignore the pain and injustice that exists in this world, just that we can also spend some time focusing on life’s gifts. Gratitude has magical powers, giving us a sense of well-being, balancing us, energizing us, and giving us hope. It reconnects us to our MOJO.
There are many things to be grateful for: colorful autumn leaves, legs that work, friends who listen and really hear, chocolate, fresh eggs, warm jackets, tomatoes, a good book, beautiful flowers, our health, butterflies. Oh, and did I mention chocolate? It’s worth mentioning again! What’s on your list?
Some Ways to Practice Gratitude
• Keep a Gratitude Journal and list things for which you are thankful. It can be a simple notepad or a journal with an inspirational quote on it.
Each morning and/or each night, add even just one thing to your list. If you miss a day or two, don’t worry about it. Pick up where you left off. Keeping that journal where you can see it will remind you to think in a grateful way.
I have clients who keep this list on their phone so they can add to it any time, and look at it any time they need a pick me up.
• Make a Gratitude Collage by drawing or pasting pictures of things that you are grateful for, that make you happy.
• Practice gratitude around the dinner table or make it part of your nighttime routine.
• Re-frame challenges by making a game of finding the hidden blessing in challenging situations.
• When you feel like complaining, take out your list and add to it. You may be amazed by how much better you feel.
• Use a Gratitude Jar. You can decorate it … or not. Fill it with daily notes of appreciation. Try to write something different each day if you can. Over time you will be surprised by how many different things you have to be grateful for, and the jar will be a powerful visual cue to trigger the benefits of gratitude.

2. I am grateful for my friendship with _____ because …
3. Something silly I am grateful for is …
4. I am grateful for _____ (happy memory) because …
5. I am grateful for _____ skill that I have because …
6. I am grateful for _____ food because …
7. I am grateful for _____ (this problem) because it’s teaching me …
8. I am grateful for _____ (season) because …
9. I am grateful for _____ (song, book, movie)
10. I am grateful for _____ (something special to you)
It doesn’t have to be complicated. Your gratitude can be for something as simple as the morning dew, or the feel of the warm sun on your skin. As you practice, an inner shift begins to occur, and you may be delighted to discover how content and hopeful you are feeling.That sense of fulfillment, of regaining your MOJO is gratitude at work!
