WHAT ARE THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER?
Sunday July 22 and ends on Thursday August 23 2018
The Dog Days aren’t only observing your dog panting on a boiling hot summer day.
Many years ago this did coincide with the year’s heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.
Ancient folks thought that the “combined heat” of Sirius and the Sun caused midsummer’s heat wave.
The rising of Sirius does not actually affect the weather, but for the ancient Egyptians, Sirius appeared just before the Nile River’s flood season. They used Sirius as a “watchdog” for that event. The Egyptions watched the skies for answers to questions on when to plant, and much more.
***To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. They referred to the dog days as the sizzling hot time of the calendar year, a period that could bring fever, or even catastrophe.
WHEN ARE THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER?
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days of summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, which coincide with the dawn rising of the Sirius, the Dog Star. This does occur soon after the Summer Solstice, which of course also indicates that heat will soon set in.
THE DOG STAR SIRIUS
Here are some quite important facts about the Dog Star.
Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, if you don’t count the Sun. Under the perfect conditions, it can even be seen with the naked eye during the day. Did you know that Sirius is one star , in a clusster of stars that create the constellation Canis Major, meaning “Greater Dog.” and oh yes, that is the why behind the nickname of this shining light in the sky,the Dog Star.
