3 Dysfunctional Parenting Styles you need to avoid

What are the examples of dysfunctional parenting styles, and what can you do to recognize and avoid them in your family?

All parents want the best for their children – that’s true. But sometimes it’s easy to get trapped in a dysfunctional parenting style and do the kid more harm than good. What are the examples of dysfunctional parenting styles, and what can you do to recognize and avoid them in your family?

1. Too much attention

We all know that paying attention to children is a key thing in raising them. A kid needs to be noticed, cared for and understood – these are some natural needs. But when parents pay too much attention to the little one, it becomes problematic. Why? The child whose needs okare constantly fulfilled and even the smallest problems is a tragedy for their mum and dad, may grow egoistic and selfish, without any sensitivity towards the others’ emotions.

2. High expectations

High expectations are a vital part of a healthy family and social life. In the future, children will be expected to do a lot of things – at school, at work or among friends. It’s good to be a demanding parent, but it’s dangerous to have the expectations too high. It may cause problems with the child’s self-esteem – they may think they’re never ‘good enough’. It’s reasonable to demand, but also to praise. Kids mustn’t read books and be kind all the time – they can also go to daycare playgrounds, mess around and be a little naughty!

3. Little affection

It’s vital to show affection in a family – it’s made of the people who are the closest to each other. Parents shouldn’t ban their kids from showing emotions towards others. It may create a dysfunctional style in relationships later on. Kids shouldn’t be scared of showing their feelings and affection, and they should treat it as something positive, as a sign of love.

Remember, that even though you, as a parent, may want the best for your family and the kids, it’s relatively easy to make a mistake in your parenting style which will affect your kid all their life. Make sure that you are aware of the process of kid-raising and do it with thought.
