What YOU can do to improve your mental wellness during the pandemic!
This article will give you insight on the psychological effects of COVID-19 along with prevention strategies to help you or a loved one who may be struggling!
Have you been feeling uneasy? As if nothing is getting better, almost like you're trapped? COVID-19 has impacted the lives of everyone in different ways. We are all mentally drained. In fact, statistics have shown that mental illness is more prominent and rapidly increasing during the pandemic. I promise that you are not alone.
Collectively, we need to talk about mental illness now more than ever. People who have never dealt with mental illness are showing signs of development and individuals with diagnoses are being triggered by the effects of government regulations and lockdowns. Our lives have rapidly changed in 2020 and it is crucial to dig to the root cause of these unwarranted feelings and assist our peers and adolescent population to prevent and heal the COVID-19 blues.
It is time for YOU to be the CEO of your health and well-being!
Mental Illness rates increasing due to the pandemic:
Our well-being is just as important as physical health. We need to protect our mental health while also preventing the spread of COVID-19 and the only way we can do this is to work together!
Since the pandemic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and contamination phobia is prevailing. This is stemmed solely through uncertainty and developing compulsions to frequently sanitize.
Symptoms of anxiety are increasing. Many of us are feeling uncertain and wondering when our lives will go back to normal, how we are going to survive this pandemic financially and are feeling the urge to get out of the house and do something. Anxiety rates among adolescents are also increasing due to the lack of social interactions and inconsistencies in their day to day routines. There is a strong correlation between stress and anxiety. With that being said, there are ways we can eliminate these negative emotions… and they work!
What can YOU do?
In my 28 years of clinical experience as a RMT, I have witnessed the positive impact massage therapy can have on peoples mental and physical well-being. Not only is this experience extremely relaxing during its practice, but its long term effects literally take a weight off your shoulders! Massage therapy helps to induce the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol (i.e. stress hormones) which ultimately helps to reduce the feelings of anxiety. Touch is the first and last sense we have and it is incredibly healing! To find an EMT near you, visit Registered Massage Therapist Association or check out Wallis For Wellness.
Meditation is an amazing way to start or end your day. For more insight, meditation allows individuals to enter a state of mindfulness, attention and awareness. When your thoughts are moving faster than your brain, it is crucial to learn how to control those thoughts. Sometimes, it is challenging to regulate your emotions and separate yourself from life's responsibilities. Meditation is a peaceful practice that can be done ANYWHERE and on your own time! I am lucky to have Angela Kontgen as my meditation coach. Also, “Calm” is a free application for smartphones that gives you a step by step process on how to meditate with virtual instructors. During these troubling times, taking advantage of meditation applications is an empowering way to improve your well-being! Visit the application store or check out Angela’s website www.angelalontgen.com for more information!
Micro point Stimulation Therapy (MPS)
MPS, otherwise known as “the dolphin” is a combination of needleless acupuncture with micro current. What makes this therapy so amazing is that it is Health Canada and FDA approved for over the counter use of patients! This at home treatment calms the parasympathetic nervous system. The dolphin has been shown in research to help reduce stress and anxiety, inflammation, pain, lower your stress hormone called cortisol and puts your body into a rest and digest state. This tool is covered by most third party health insurance plans and can be done in the comfort of your own home, empowering you to take control and have an impact on your health.
Did you know that exercising is the ultimate natural treatment for anxiety and depression? A recent study conducted at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health found that the risk of depression decreases by 26% when an individual engages in daily physical activity at least once a day. Exercise can be done anywhere. Whether it is as simple as going for a walk, taking up a new outdoor activity or laying out a yoga mat and following virtual instructors, it is so accessible and increases your serotonin levels! There may be days where you don’t want to get out of bed, but I promise after a successful workout, you will feel better than ever!
Reading self-help books is a fantastic relaxation technique for people of all ages. It is like you are talking to a medical professional in the courtesy of your own home. Reading itself is a relaxation technique, and when you add psychological information into the mix, it is one of the best relaxation techniques for mental health. If you are not the reading type, you can also download electronic books and listen to them like a podcast! Check out my short segment for recommendations on my favourite self-help books.
Your healing journey begins and ends with you! During these troubling times, we need to take care of ourselves and our community! If we do so, we will be able to control our emotions and how we are feeling. Let’s work together as ONE!
