‘Tis the Gift to Be Simple
Let us be mindful of the true meaning of the holidays. Let us put aside the elaborate gifts and remember to make time for one another this Christmas.
I was chatting with a friend this week who was reminiscing about her grandfather. My friend’s grandfather was a Quaker and she recalls attending gatherings with him as a child. I know very little about Quakers, however this little song I was taught years ago in school came to mind:
‘Tis the gift to be simple, It’s a gift to be free,
‘Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
Will be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend, we will not be ashamed,
To turn, turn, will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come round right
Jewel - Simple gifts
As we approach the busy holiday season and contemplate the gifts we can give, to me “the gift to be simple” seems to be a very worthwhile goal.
Amid the commercials, the lights, the decorations, can we keep open hearts? Can we make connections with people? Let’s choose to believe that stress over the holidays is not a forgone conclusion.
In the following interview Jeff Schwartz from Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada shares the importance of being mindful of the true meaning of the holidays. We chat about how to avoid last minute decisions and the inevitable stress on our finances. Listen here: How to have a joyous holiday season without going deep into debt with Jeff Schwartz.
As we rush and spend and clean and bake preparing for the holiday, let’s be sure that we do not allow those preparations to lessen the quality of our connections with each other. Let’s be mindful of how our actions affect our relationships. Let’s be mindful that we do not become distracted but have open hearts and true connections.
It has been my goal – increasingly over the years to simplify our holiday season. Drawing names, limit spending, creating craft gifts, and being flexible on dates and times have all reduced stress for our family during the season.
My wish for you this season is that you find open hearts and true connections. I wish you the “gift to be simple” and I hope you find yourself in the “place just right” in 2017.
