Let’s be Joyful during the Holiday Season and Less Stressed

As fun as the holiday season can be, it does bring added stress to many. There are ways to bring more joy and peace to yourself and your family.

One of the first steps is to welcome the chaos.

It begins by accepting that you will feel some stress for sure with shopping, planning, and preparation than other times of the year. Accepting this will help you worry less. Yes, long-term stress is unhealthy, but occasionally feeling overwhelmed isn’t the end of the world.

Be flexible.

There’s a good chance your regular routine of exercise and healthy eating will be put to the test, with travel, parties, and holiday guests. Do the best you can to maintain your routine, and don’t let a few days of indulgence stress you out. If the bare minimum is what you can achieve, it is a lot better than nothing at all.

Go in Nature.

Exercise increases endorphins in your brain that increase feelings of well-being. Being in nature has a similar effect. Combining the two is a great way to stay mentally and physically Joyful over the holidays. Walking or hiking are wonderful in the cool fresh air of the winter months and give you a bit of a break from the stress of the season.

Embrace what you love about the holiday season and forget the rest.

Make conscious decisions about the traditions, the foods you love, and the invitations that truly bring you joy, and say, ‘no thank-you’ to those that don’t.

Create reasonable expectations.

It can be a lot of fun to come up with an Instagram worthy holiday table display but know when to take it easy. What starts as ‘festive holiday planning’ can start feeling like a chore before you know it. Stay aware of your stress levels and know that perfecting that Martha Stewart glazed turkey is really not worth your sanity.

Make some time for yourself.

Find an activity you enjoy. Take a break by yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing, and restoring inner calm. It could be a walk in the evening or reading that favourite book or simply listening to some favourite music.
