Laser Hair Removal vs. Waxing

The two most effective and popular procedures to get rid of unwanted hair are waxing and laser hair removal. Let’s compare how each one works.

Waxing

Waxing consists of applying hard or soft wax to the area we want to rid of hair and then ripping it off in the opposite direction of hair growth. In waxing, the hair is pulled put at the root. It works best for areas with dark, coarse hair that tends to be stubborn, such as the legs, underarms, and bikini area. It's a good idea to let hair grow about an inch before a waxing session.

After the procedure, the esthetician will apply a lotion to soothe and clean the skin. Depending on the waxed area and the client's sensitivity threshold, anti-inflammatory or antibiotic creams might also be applied.

While waxing does cost less per session, it will cost you more on a long-term basis when compared to a long-term hair removal option such as laser hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal

In Laser Hair Removal treatments a technician gives pulses of highly concentrated laser light with a specific wavelength and pulse on a particular area where they want to get rid of hair. Laser light is very fast, covering all the hairs in an area of about the size of a quarter in one second. It’s suitable even for sensitive skin. Normally, the hair in the treated area will fall out within 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. Re-growth is expected to occur, especially within the first few sessions, but will be fine, thin, and lighter in colour.

Laser light heats up the hair follicles and the hair pigment absorb this light, which causes the root of the follicle to get damaged and debilitated.

Before laser hair removal, a client can shave, but shouldn't pluck, wax, or use electrolysis for at least six weeks.

Benefits of Waxing

Waxing provides smooth skin immediately and for three to four weeks, depending on individual hair growth rate.

The frequency and density of hair growth will then decrease progressively until the hair follicle is dead. Treatments should usually be scheduled every six weeks until hair is completely eliminated, which may take up to seven sessions. The absence of hair will be noticeable in the first session of laser treatment and over the first month.
