Could You Have a Food Intolerance?

Have you noticed you feel “off” after eating certain foods? Click here for symptoms of food intolerances, and what you can do if you suspect you may have one!

Unlike food allergies, food intolerances or food sensitivities, are often the result of digestive problems.

Food allergies cause an immune system reaction that affect numerous organs in the body, and can cause a range of symptoms. In serious cases, a food allergy can be severe or even life threatening.

Food intolerances tend to be much less serious - but that doesn’t mean they can’t impact your day to day life and overall wellbeing!

Symptoms of a Food Intolerance or Sensitivity

Symptoms of food sensitivities or intolerances can appear hours to days after the culprit food is consumed - making it very difficult to identify. The most common signs of a food sensitivity are:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Eczema (or any itchiness, redness, or skin changes
  • Joint pain
  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, if you are frequently experiencing these symptoms after you eat, you might just have a food intolerance.

Fortunately when it comes to food intolerances, simply avoiding the food that causes issues can help to reduce your symptoms. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to determine which food (or foods) are causing the problem in the first place.

What Can I Do if I Suspect I Have a Food Intolerance?

If you suspect you may have a food intolerance, book an appointment with a Naturopathic Doctor (ND), who will do a full assessment to get a better idea of your symptom picture.

The next step may be to do Food Sensitivity testing or an Elimination Diet to determine which foods may be triggering the reaction. Once the results are in and the triggers are identified, your ND will be able to help you set up a diet plan, providing resources for you to be successful in following it. At the same time, they can work with you to start healing your digestive system.
