Working with a Naturopath: 5 Questions to ask BEFORE Signing Up!

Are you interested in working with a Naturopath? Here are five questions to ask a Naturopath before agreeing to work with them!

Navigating through naturopathic doctors shouldn’t be difficult - but with the variety of backgrounds, training, and experience that naturopaths have, it can be hard to determine which one is the right fit for you. We spoke with award-winning naturopath Dr. Kristin Wootton to put together a list of five questions you should ask before starting to work with one to ensure they have the education and experience required to help you look and feel you best!

5 Questions to Ask a Naturopath BEFORE Working With Them

#1 - What are your qualifications?

In Ontario, Naturopathic Doctors (ND’s) are regulated healthcare professionals registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO). "All licensed NDs complete a minimum of three years university-level training, including pre-medical courses, then four years at an accredited naturopathic medical college." - CONO. After their schooling, they go through rigorous licensing and board exams before obtaining their license. In Ontario, the title, “Naturopath”, “Naturopathic Doctor” and “ND” (and their French equivalents) may only be used by members currently registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario and have met the standards of education and are qualified to provide safe care.

#2 - Do I need to be sick to see a Naturopathic Doctor?

The answer to this one is easy: Absolutely not! Although there are many ways a Naturopathic Doctor can support you while you are sick, they can also help you achieve or maintain optimal health depending on your personal and family health history. We can go through any lab testing reports or run other tests to get an idea of where you're at and where we can optimize your health.

ND's can also help you sort through information you come across and help you determine what will be most helpful for you. Most people come to an ND with a pre-existing condition - but we can support you with preventative medicine as well.

#3 - Do you have an area of focus?

Many naturopathic doctors will have health conditions or treatment modalities that they focus on or have done further education in. It is important to get an idea of how up-to-date the practitioner is in your specific area of concern so you know you are getting the best care you can.

#4 - What services do you offer?

Although all ND's are trained in the same services, each one may provide different support and it is important to ask this based on what you're looking for. Does your ND do acupuncture, meal planning, specialized hormone testing, food sensitivity testing or offer other services? Do they have experience working with specific populations? This will allow you to get a sense of what to expect for your treatment plan as well.

#5 - Will you work with my other healthcare providers?

Many ND's believe in integrative care. It is important to know if your ND is willing to communicate with your other healthcare providers (with your consent) so that everyone is on the same page when helping you achieve optimal health. It is also important to know if the ND has a network of other providers in the area that they can refer patients to if they are in need of care outside of the naturopathic scope. Having a practitioner who is willing to work with your other healthcare providers will give you the most comprehensive care possible!
