The Problems Many Youth Face Today
Know what the youth of today are facing and having to deal with.
An appalling amount of today's youth have fallen on hard times, facing many difficulties, such as depression and feeling alone. As the resulting combination of economic recession, social changes, and general coming of age dilemmas, today is one of the toughest times to grow up in. Our youth is witnessing some troubling times in modern society. Whether it be a politically divided nation, family issues, stress at school, or drama amongst friends, there seems to be not one young person who hasn't seen their fair share of troubles. The following are 3 problems many youths face today, how to recognize them, and how to help.
1. Stress at School
Both college and high-school come with their own respective difficulties. In high-school, young people are at tender ages, with their hormones raging and their bodies undergoing incredible changes. Around thirteen or fourteen to about eighteen, nineteen, and even twenty, kids go through puberty. During this phase in life, their emotions run rampant. Many discover the wonders of dating and relationships, begin to experiment with different lifestyles, and really begin their journey to becoming an adult. Some of the problems associated with puberty include moodiness, anger, depression, anxiety, feeling unaccepted, loss or confusion of identity, struggling in school, and even bullying. In order to support youth who might be facing these problems, one should try to understand and relate to them, but also give them their space. Allow these youth to feel the full spectrum of their emotions and woes, but help them to channel them in healthy ways, such as physical activity or creative arts. Members of today's youth who do not address their issues often resort to crime or other forms of trouble making, isolation, bullying, and even suicide in extreme cases.
College is an equally stressful time for today's youth, as the pressure to succeed looms overhead. Many people are overwhelmed by all of the academic and financial responsibilities associated with college, and can even find themselves in an existential or identity crisis over not knowing what their purpose of going to college really is. Many struggle with deciding on a major, feeling pressured by their choice of work for the rest of their lives. Dealing with the stress of higher education can be dealt with in many of the same ways as high-school problems. College students often just need a shoulder to cry on and someone to listen to them. Common signs of college-related issues include experimentation with drugs and alcohol, excessive partying, poor grades, unhealthy dietary and sleeping patterns, and general moodiness.
A good chunk of today's youthful population has had to move back in with their parents, whenever possible. Many of the options for employment that their parents had access to, such as coal mining, have all but dried up, especially in smaller areas. Rural towns that were built around only one or two industries are rapidly becoming ghost towns, with no employment opportunities. This can lead the youth of these areas to feel trapped and isolated, with nowhere to go. Many spiral into depression until they hit rock bottom. Drug addiction and alcoholism are prevalent in today's youth who can't make it out to a city with gainful employment. There aren't many ways to help with this issue besides teaching young people better methods of coping or helping them move to a more prosperous area.
Although the world has never been more interconnected than it is today, with the internet and social media. Most of the population, whether young or old, spend an overwhelming amount of time on their smartphones, but despite our means of mass communication, today's youth is falling into a trap of self-made isolation. Many younger people compare themselves to an unrealistic image of their peers, which has been created by sharing only the highlights of our lives on social media. Unable to deal with the comparison, young people are prone to pushing others away and secluding themselves. One way of helping lift one out of this sort of slump is to limit their time on social media and the internet, in general.
