Before Toys R Us came to Route 4 East

A Journey into Paramus

We will soon find out what will replace Toys R Us on Route 4 East in Paramus. To many the toy store dating back to the late 1960's is the only business they know on that site.

In fact, before Toys R Us and before they large development next door (24 Hour Fitness now; the old Stanley Warner Theater), the location was a shady tree covered and bit bucolic location occupied by the Twin Lakes Motor Lodge.

The place harkens back to an era before Holiday Inns and chain motels.

A description on the back side of a post card for the motor lodge tells its story:

" 6 1/2 miles west of George Washington Bridge. 15 minutes from Manhattan (N.Y.C.), 40 attractively furnished units. Radio and TV available. Air-conditioned. 'Rest assured' in the quiet of our 10 acres of tree-shaded grounds, away from traffic's roar. Open all year. N.J. Route 4".

By the way, the Route 17 North Toys R Us was a Best and Company store before the toy seller moved in there. For old timers, you might recall that Best and Company was an old Fifth Avenue department store that first came to Paramus in the early 1950's on Route 4 West just across the River Edge line. Today that site is home Verizon and Eye Lab stores.
