My Mindful Travel Experience

8 months into our Epic family travel adventure and we've become more mindful than we ever imagined.

Over the last 8 months my family and I have lived in 3 different countries and 6 separate locations.

We began our journey on Zocalo organic vegetable farm for 2 months last July and August, in Erin ON. Together we learned all about how an organic farm runs, and even got to help out on occasion. Such a humbling experience to see where our food actually comes from and all the love, sweat and tears that go into every piece.

From there we moved to Cozumel Mexico from September to December and rented a house right near the water. It was an amazing learning experience for us and our 2 boys. We enjoyed the laid back caribbean lifestyle, which included eating wonderful food, snorkelling regularly and making friends and memories along the way.

After returning home for 3 weeks and spending Christmas with family and friends in Cambridge, ON, we repacked our bags and headed off to beautiful New Zealand to follow the sunshine and spend summer in the southern hemisphere in January. Since coming here we have visited and lived in 3 spectacular regions, Waikato, Northland and we are currently residing in Auckland. This leg of our journey has been a little different than the others, in that we have been travelling around more frequently and living out of our suitcases and housesitting for those going on their own holiday.

So you may be wondering how all this travelling can lead to mindfulness?

While living our regular lives back in Canada, we often forgot to stop, enjoy and feel gratitude for what we had, where we lived and take in the small moments of a great view, a beautiful day or even a yucky one. What I mean by this, is that we took for granted our circumstances because we were living through routine and not able to see things for what they are in that routine - always knowing that tomorrow there will still be the same things and the same views.

routine

The same ole routine

This constant moving and relocating to different areas has opened our eyes to living in the moment and being mindful of our surroundings, knowing that in a few days or a week we will be moving on. We appreciate the spectacular views, the animals we are caring for and are doing our best to get to know the areas we are living in. How many of you live in a small town or better yet a big city, like Toronto for instance, and have never been to the CN Tower or ventured to Toronto Island, or taken in a Toronto Blue Jays or TFC game? There is beauty and magic in every place, we sometimes have to take the time to get out, experience where we are, live in the moment and be mindful of everything around us.

I'd love to say that we live in the moment everyday, but of course picking up and moving as often as we are right now, we do have to look to the future from time to time. What I can say is that sitting back with a glass of wine or a cup of tea and looking out the window or taking a drive has become more of a routine thing for me and my family now, and we owe it all to our travels.
