With the increase in pollution and other environmental hazards affecting everything from the food we eat to the water, we drink water purification is viewed by many as an absolute necessity. The investment in water purification systems in the form of water filters and water faucet purification setups is at an all-time high.
With the most recent scandal about lead poisoning in some Michigan communities that affected the citizens there, many are now really reluctant to drink tap water. Many tap water sources contain low amounts of chlorine which should certainly be alarming and troubling.
Not to mention the myriad of other harmful substances like toxic heavy metals, like mercury and lead, for instance, many citizens are very reluctant to ingest tap water. So either buying purified water or purifying your own water is the only reasonable solution for many.
Different Ways You Can Filter Your Own Water
Contrary to popular belief water filtering is not limited to charcoal water filtration methods exclusively. There are a number of different ways to filter your water that can be equally or more effective than the usual charcoal water filtration methods.
Boiling Your Water to Purify It
There are a few different ways you can purify water with one of the most simple methods being boiling your water. Boiling water can kill a number of viruses and bacteria but will probably have little effect on toxins like lead or mercury. So if you do use boiling as a method you may want to use a secondary method to filter out heavy metal toxins.
Carbon Water Filtering
Carbon water filters are one of the most common ways to filter the water of impurities. Carbon filters commonly referred to as charcoal filters come in two forms: activated form and block charcoal. Activated charcoal filters are positively charged so are effective at removing impurities. Block charcoal on the other hand has a higher rate of overall contaminant removal. Both forms are ideal for removing bad tastes and odors and pesticides, benzene, and chlorine. But both are relatively ineffective at removing heavy metals. It can also act as a water softener.
Reverse Osmosis is probably one of the most effective ways to purify water. But the process of reverse osmosis requires a bit more ingenuity than the other methods. Passing water through a semipermeable membrane is how reverse osmosis takes place. This method is effective at removing chemical contaminants, viruses, bacteria, and protozoa.
Water distillation is probably the most effective water purification method of them all. The distillation process works by heating the water for evaporation. The impure water source is heated to a low evaporation point. Once the water has evaporated the water is then transferred to a condenser. The heating source is then removed and the water changes back to its liquid form free of all impurities and contaminants.
