5 Reasons You Should Opt for Natural Childbirth [Infographic]
Are you looking to enroll and take a proven-effective program that helps mothers undergo a natural childbirth? This is the place to go.
Just like planning for a major event in your life, preparing for childbirth is an important part of the fear-free birth process. One of the aspects of birthing that mothers give considerable thought to is natural childbirth. Most women prefer delivery that’s free from medical intervention or unnatural pain relief. That’s because a woman’s body is equipped to give birth with little to zero pain.
Don’t get us wrong! There is nothing wrong with medical intervention as it had saved the lives of many mothers in the past. However, nature intended for birthing to be relaxed and intuitive. Let’s take a look at the reasons why you should choose natural childbirth.
1. Labor is considerably shorter
An unmedicated childbirth allows a woman to feel the contractions, signaling her that it’s the right time to push. But due to the fear of feeling unbearable pain, most women opt for an epidural. However, there are instances that pain relievers do more harm than good. It can significantly slow down or impede contractions, which lead to longer labor time.
2. Breastfeeding is facilitated
According to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, the use of epidurals during labor is associated with the significant increase in bottle-fed babies. In fact, according to a study, mothers who have had epidurals don’t continue with breastfeeding 6 weeks after childbirth, often due to lack of milk.
Babies, on the other hand, have a hard time nursing. Because they’re drowsy from the effects of narcotic pain relievers, they have difficulty latching on. These sleepy babies would rather get some shut-eye than nurse, which can cause problems in both mother and baby’s breastfeeding journey.
3. Faster recovery time
A cesarean section may be required in some situations (e.g., a big baby with a mother who has a small pelvis or not properly positioned for vaginal birth). This major surgery would require the mother to stay longer in the hospital, from two to four days, and recovery may take up to two months as compared to natural birthing. A mother who gave birth naturally can usually leave the hospital after 24 hours. She’s more alert and ready to tackle the task of taking care of her baby almost immediately.
4. Healthier for the mother and child
Undergoing a major surgery like a cesarean section has negative effects such as longer recovery, which means that you’ll be in pain longer and would need pain relievers to alleviate the discomfort. When you opt for a natural birth, you and your baby are both safe from possible complications that stem from medical interventions and narcotic pain relief.
For instance, due to epidurals slowing down labor, your doctor will most likely recommend Pitocin, which will lead to more intense, unnatural and frequent contractions. This will cause a drop in blood pressure, resulting in lack of oxygen for your little one. The baby will be distressed, and an emergency c-section is then highly recommended to save both mother and child.
5. Greater connection to the experience
When you’re in a drug-induced state, you won’t be able to experience the beauty of your baby’s birth. You’ll be confined to a bed, and won’t be able to change positions to allow the natural birthing process to take its course. With a natural childbirth, you’ll find it easy to listen to your body and work with it to get the birth you deserve. You’ll have full control, and aware of your surroundings even if you’re away in that special place in your mind.
