Winter DIY Projects - Shower Renovation

It's too cold for outdoor DIY projects. Now is the time to get those indoor projects done. Renovating your shower is a good place to start.

The Christmas season is over, the decorations put away. Now is the time to tackle those overdue indoor DIY projects before Spring.

One project that can make a huge improvement to the look of the bathroom is a shower renovation.

Different types of Shower finishes:

There are two main types of shower construction for both separate shower cubicles and showers-above-the-bath-tub.

Many modern homes have a shower in the bath tub and a waterproof shell called an enclosure or insert, to protect the wall. Some may have tiles for waterproofing. Other homes have bathrooms with separate shower cubicles with either type of finish. All of these could benefit from a make over.

If you intend replacing a shower insert or enclosure, the procedure is quite simple. Remove the old one and replace it with a new one.

There is a huge range of inserts available in a variety of designs, sizes, colours and finishes. I found 342 different items on the Home Depot website alone.

Replacing Shower Tiles

If you have a tiled shower, replacing the old chipped and discoloured tiles is a good place to start your bathroom renovation.

The first decision to make is the choice of tiles.

  • Colours
  • Size
  • Finish
  • Type
  • Texture

Visit a supplier's store or website to make your selection.

Pinterest has a huge selection of photos of tiles.

After making your selection, measure the area to be re-tiled, order the materials and tools you will need for the job. Always order more tiles than needed to allow for breakages - you will need to cut some tiles to size and may break a few!

It's a good idea to keep some tiles on hand for future replacements. Tiles from a different batch in the future could be a different colour.

In the worst case, you could find that your tiles are no longer available.

A shower renovation will transform your bathroom, whichever type of shower, in bath or cubicle, tiled or insert you have.

And it's a great indoor winter DIY project.
