Let’s be blunt: Menopause is daunting

If you are over 40 and were born with a uterus, this is essential information.

The menopausal transition most often begins between ages 45 and 55. It usually lasts about seven years but can be as long as 14 years. The duration can depend on lifestyle factors such as smoking, age it begins, and even race and ethnicity. During perimenopause, the body's production of estrogen and progesterone, two hormones made by the ovaries, starts to decline.

Menopause is one day - the day that marks 12 consecutive months without a period. After that one day, you are considered post menopause. Some women don't have any trouble with menopausal symptoms and may even feel relieved when they no longer need to worry about painful periods or getting pregnant.

64% of women are completely unprepared for menopause...and 73% of women do absolutely NOTHING to treat their menopause symptoms.

That means they suffer needlessly through...

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mental health changes
  • Stubborn weight gain
  • Mood swings
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sleep problems
  • Thinning hair
  • Dry skin

Menopause is too big of a deal to struggle through on your own!

menopause doesn't have to suck

...if we can shift from under-informed and unprepared to knowledgeable and empowered.

I wrote an article recently called Menopause, Perimenopause and Myths. (below) We discuss menopause as not a one size fits all experience, and women cannot predict when they will reach it, nor can they make it end more quickly.

There are three stages to menopause.

  • Pre-menopause: Women have full ovarian function, regularly produce estrogen, and ovulate.
  • Perimenopause: The ovaries begin to fluctuate in their ovulation and production of estrogen, which can result in unpredictable menstrual cycles and symptoms.
  • Menopause: The ovaries stop making estrogen. The 1 day after 12 months without menstruation.

In the following article, we cover symptoms and answer some of the myths around Menopause. Article: Menopause, Perimenopause and Myths.

Menopause is definitely a time of change but it can also be a time of choice and discovery of what you want. How you embark upon this transition can have a tremendous impact on your experience of it, as well as on your choice of behaviors.
