Pelvic Girdle Pain – It’s time to take back your life!

Pain can have many contributing factors such as pregnancy, birth, surgery, falls, accidents, trauma, overactivity in the muscles, and even hormones.

Pelvic girdle pain is a term used for many pain conditions. Pubic joint pain, tailbone pain, hip pain, pain with intercourse, pain in the vulva, pain at the entrance to the vagina, perineal pain, even anal or rectal pain.

Pelvic girdle pain is often closely associated with low back pain and low back pain is strongly correlated with pelvic floor dysfunction.

Hypertonic muscles or a non-relaxing pelvic floor can be a major contributor to pelvic pain and discomfort such as tailbone pain or SI Joint pain.

Symptoms can vary and may be more severe for some women. You may have pain or discomfort in any or all of the following places:

  • over your pelvis, especially at the pubic bone at the front
  • along your groin area
  • below your tummy
  • in your hips
  • across one or both sides of your lower back or buttocks (bottom)

Some other symptoms are:

  • Difficulty walking (a waddling gait).
  • Pain when putting weight on one leg, such as climbing stairs or getting out of the bath.
  • Pain and/or difficulty in straddle movements, such as getting in and out of the bath.
  • Clicking or grinding in the pelvic area.
  • Limited and painful hip abduction. (Hip abduction is the movement of the leg away from the middle of the body, such as when you step to the side or get out of a car.)
  • Hip movements. Difficulty lying in some positions, such as on your side.
  • Pain during normal activities and/or pain/difficulty during sex.

Releasing tension is always my recommendation for a starting point along with seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist.
