Say hi to your neighbours...

In 2013 we started work on our latest build project, housing 50+ families. C'mon over for a visit and talk to your neighbours about their HabitatWR homes.

Learn how you can help Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region.  We NEED you to help build homes, raise money, shop and volunteer at our ReStores and MORE!  Click on the 'talk to us' button to get involved in your community or learn more.

We build so much more than homes.  We build hope and communities.

In August 2013, our crew of staff and volunteers started work on our newest build site, Kehl Street (off of Ottawa Street). This development will house 50+ multi-dwellings, making this project Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region's largest development to-date. Isn't that amazing that this neighbourhood will house 50+ families?  Think of all the happy moms, dads, kids, cats, dogs and family hamsters?  Flip through these photos to watch the progress and other community members building alongside our families.

Updates from Kehl Street families that moved in last year

We followed up with some of the Kehl Street families for an update on how they are doing and what it's been like living in their new homes.  You're welcomed into their homes for a virtual cup of coffee, a slice of cake and neighbourly love.  Cozy up and enjoy the read.  (Want an update on all things HabitatWR?  Click here.)

Jennifer & Adrian

“We’re so happy every single day. When we found out which house was ours, Adrian was over the moon. He actually volunteered a lot on this particular home, so he feels like his fingerprints are everywhere—behind our walls, under the floors. It’s a magical feeling. Our whole family takes such pride in keeping it looking beautiful. Christian takes such good care of his own room. We set it all up for him, just like we planned, and he ran right over to the bed and jumped on it. His very own big boy bed. I’ll never, ever forget that moment of joy. Now we’re looking at doing some gardening. My mum is a huge gardener so she’s going to come over and help. Right now, Christian loves digging in the dirt. And Adrian bought us the best hose in the world. Seriously, you’ve never seen someone so excited about a garden hose! And our neighbours are more than I’d ever hoped for. So kind and friendly. I want all the Habitat donors to know how grateful we all are. We promise to continue to work hard every day, just like we always have. Thank you so much.”

“I have to say how amazing it is to have our own bedrooms. Before, my kids shared a room and I slept on the couch. Now, all 3 of us have our own bedrooms, our own space. And I can’t put into words just how much that means to me, and to the kids. It’s so nice to be able to call it our home. I’m so thankful that caring people helped give me and my family the chance to create a safe environment for ourselves.”

Kristy & Dave

“I can’t decide what I love most. One thing for sure is my kitchen. It’s the heart of our home, and it is so bright and open. But I also absolutely love our neighbours and the neighbourhood. It’s a nice little community, like a village right in the city. Our neighbour across Kehl Street has been here 10 years. And she told me that before our homes there really wasn’t much going on here. But since October, the neighbourhood has come alive again with kids and she loves it! My message for the Habitat donors is this: thank you. Having a forever home has given us a sense of stability from which we can grow and thrive to our fullest potential.”

What's next for Kehl Street and how can you help shape it?

We're currently building our new block of 6 houses.  That's six more families due to move in.  Focused on providing a hand up and not a hand out, HabitatWR partners with families who are willing volunteer 250 hours, per adult, of "sweat equity," and will repay a zero-down payment, interest-free mortgage geared to their income.  We are starting our fifth block THIS SPRING!

Help us build homes, build hope and build communities.
