We spoke with Calvin about what inspires his passion for hearing health, and how he approaches hearing care.

What inspires you to get up every morning?

I believe the work I am doing is really helpful to those who suffer from hearing loss or tinnitus. I spend countless hours learning more ways to help those who suffer from hearing loss or tinnitus, and I know the work we are doing improves our patient’s lives.

All too often our lives are busy and we move so quickly, but in my clinic we schedule lots of time so we can listen and learn and design a plan to help. I think being able to develop a relationship with each patient allows us to provide better service and a wonderful learning experience. I really love to teach!

Calvin enjoys teaching at Conestoga College as well!

Why did you decide to focus on hearing?

I kind of stumbled into Audiology – but I am sure glad I did. It is such a wonderful field that blends science, technology, people and human skills, as well as the need to understand business. I really think to be a good clinician you need to not only understand the science and technology at a pretty high end, but you need to be able to relate that to people and earn their trust as well.

If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

I would have spent more time in school and completed my PhD studies when I was a bit younger! But to be honest, I wouldn't change a thing about my life. I have a wonderful marriage and 3 amazing children. I have a great career and wonderful healthy family.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

I’d add a little more kindness and patience! I think these are two things that are missing today.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My Dad! He taught me the value of hard work.

Thanks Calvin!

People generally don't think about their hearing until there is an issue. At Grand River Hearing & Tinnitus Centre we recommend having your hearing checked throughout your life, but starting consistent testing at age 40 can help with early detection.
