Treating Autism Naturally
According to the Centre for Disease Control, approximately 1 in every 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
According to the Centre for Disease Control, approximately 1 in every 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) via estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network1.
This statistic is shocking as ASD was diagnosed in the year 2000 at approximately 1 in 150 children1.
There are many natural ways to help to support and treat autism or those individuals identified on the autism spectrum.
The first piece of the puzzle is to stop adding toxins into the body and to allow the body a chance to naturally detoxify and begin to heal.
Toxins come in many shapes and forms, so it is critical to identify all of the ways that they can find their way into our bodies and lifestyle. This can include pesticides on our fresh produce, antibiotics and growth hormones in meat and fish, and petroleum bi-products and chemicals in cleaning supplies and cosmetics.

Toxins are also lurking in cleaning supplies such as laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet cleaner, etc - so replace these with vinegar and baking soda, and non-toxic soaps from your local health food store. There you will also find natural cosmetics, creams, make up, deodorant and toothpaste, shampoo, hair gel, that do not add to your toxic load.
It is also important to work with your doctor to help to reduce or eliminate medications wherever possible, to allow the body to begin to normalize without additional toxins, and to properly monitor the healing evolving with a variety of natural solutions implemented. Ritalin is prescribed quite often for various behavioural issues or emotions experienced and it can add to already existing problems. Some of the potential side effects of Ritalin are actually transient depressed mood and aggressive behaviour2.

Dietary changes are important to support healing autism and those on the spectrum. Most important is to limit or remove sugar from the diet. Not just sugar in candy and sweet fruits, but also all sources that break down into sugar, such as bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, corn (starchy vegetables), cereal, granola bars and packaged or convenience foods.
Replace these foods with colourful vegetables, berries and Granny Smith apples (very low glycemic level foods = low sugar), raw nuts and seeds, avocados, chia and hemp seeds, and unsweetened almond/coconut/cashew milk instead of cow’s milk.
A gentle detox process would be to incorporate green juices regularly - with cucumber, zucchini, kale, spinach, bok choy, Granny Smith apples, and lemon juice. As well as trying to add as many raw, colourful, organic foods to your diet as you can.
