So is it?
I spend time thinking about one group of people. Billionaires. Most of us all remember saying, "If I had a million dollars I would..." Billionaires, they become wealthy beyond our dreams, and what do they do? They work!
Google's parent company Alphabet and pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced recently they would join forces to champion and create a new company called Galvani Bioelectronics to develop implants that could wrap around nerves to modify electrical signals. These devices would hopefully help fight disease like asthma or arthritis (Which I could use with all of this typing).
Wait! What does this have to do with happiness?
The founders of Google started with a search engine, and now their resources have extended far, far beyond to help humans in many, many ways.
They are not selling the company to retire, stop working and play, but encouraging more discovery and trying to make the world a better place.
So, is happiness a choice?
Well, let's go even further to teenagers. Often a time of difficultly filled with drama among early adolescence, teens spend much of their time thinking about their MAJOR issues, and some of them are major, but many, we realize as we get older, are not.
When looking at a teenager, it seems that their self focus takes away from their ability at times to be totally happy.
A common theme. Does the excess focus on the self reduce happiness?
The above are two examples, extremes if you will. The focus of choice on where one should spend time seems to influence the "Happiness Dialogue" within.
What can we choose?
As my son so simply pointed out, we can't control our happiness all of the time. Loved ones clearly play a significant role in our happiness. Time also plays a big part in our own happiness in digesting some of these big events. Taking time to grieve is a completely accepted notion. In time, the grieving process runs it course and there is an opportunity to be happy.
So what's the plan?
The plan is to choose to focus on what makes you happy and not to force anything. Each of us has activities and people that make us happy. It is up to us to allocate our time (in balance) to allow our minds to become less clogged with the negative.
Replace The Negative Energy
Once we recognize it, it is up to us to slowly replace time and energy away from that which makes us stressed and sad and replace it with things that make us happy. FEAR NOT, IT TAKES TIME. One step at a time, day by day, we can replace our negative energy with positive.

A two step plan...
Start by taking a walk.
Think of what makes you happy and how you want to spend your time more on the things you enjoy. Think about how you might give of yourself in simple ways to help others. Turn that dreaded phone call to a loved one to one of giving where you listen and you you let the person on the other end feel you love them.
While you are on that walk, think about those simple choices and actions, and slowly but surely it starts to add up. Not to merely achieve a feeling, but to "see what happens".
Finally - Write it down
Once you have thought through your plan on that walk, writing down what you want to do will increase the chances of it happening. Start slow. Stay calm. One day at a time, and you will find that your strength is incredible.
