Strength and Cardio and Rest, Oh My! PART ONE - STRENGTH

Strength vs. Cardio vs. Rest

With the fitness revolution now on in full-force, there’s very little chance you’ve never heard the terms ‘strength’, ‘cardio’ or ‘rest’ in relation to working out. But what do they really mean? Below we look at the first in this three-part series, STRENGTH TRAINING.

Strength Training

Strength training is a type of physical exercise that focuses on the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction - which builds the strength, size, and anaerobic endurance of your muscles.

Strength workouts should be between half and hour and one hour - max. Make sure you include a warm-up to ensure your muscles are ready to go, and a cool down to help them relax and start to recover.

Strength Training

Include exercises for both your upper and lower body, and strive for a balance between pushing and pulling movements: for example, chest press (push) and rowing (pull).

As you improve, you can progressively increase the weight used for each exercise (but make sure you change up your routine every 4 - 6 weeks).

Remember: strength training won’t necessarily make you ‘bulk up’ (unless that’s your goal and you take steps in other areas of your life to make it happen), but more muscle means a higher metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories when you rest.

Strength training also helps strengthen joints and bones, and you can use it as an opportunity to improve your flexibility and balance.

Strength training can be done with bodyweight exercises at home, but is most effective when you have access to a variety of equipment and expertise at a gym.
