Happy Valentine's Day to Me!

Happy Valentine's Day to Me!

Just two weeks after the Christmas season, stores were beginning to show signs of Cupid’s arrival...

Now as we approach the mid-mark of February, we see row upon row of hearts, candy, teddy bears, balloons, flowers. It is estimated that over one billion cards will be exchanged, and spending is expected to be over $13 billion in the US alone. All this outpouring of love in preparation for February 14th – a day known as “a celebration of love and affection between intimate companions”.

Valentine's Day, Single, Heart, Separated, Separation, Divorce

I went to a card shop and to e-card sites to do a little investigating and discovered some typical cards: to my wife, to my husband, sweetheart, soul mate, teacher, friend, sister, daughter, boss, son, granddaughter, even to my pet. But something was missing.

What if your ‘status’ is listed as a broken heart? People dealing with a recent break up of a relationship or in the middle of a divorce may find themselves lonely and isolated. Surrounded by images of intimate love, reminders of a ‘now ended’ relationship can often make the sadness even worse.

What if we looked at this event as a day not only to celebrate romantic love but also to celebrate love for one’s self. Don’t underestimate the importance of taking care of the most important person in your life: YOU. Dealing with a break-up can leave you feeling empty inside. So what better time to focus on loving yourself?

Happy Valentine's Day to Me!

So, this Valentine’s Day, do something that makes you feel good and loved. Spoil yourself - just because. You deserve it. Send yourself an e-card, buy some fresh flowers, chocolate or treat yourself to your favourite wine; and tell yourself you are loved! Because at the end of the day, the only person who is guaranteed to be with you your whole life is YOU.

And if you’re the creative or entrepreneur type, maybe you could design a few ‘Happy Valentine’s Day To Me’ cards. There’s a market for it.
