Another Gift from A Local Bank from A Long Time Ago
Journeys into River Edge
Last time we shared with you a bank give away from a local savings institution of the past – River Edge Savings and Loan.
Here is another one – this one a small sewing kit that from the outside looks like a pack of matches. From almost six decades ago, it does not appear to have been used much, but it remained in my Mom’s sewing draw until her passing in 2017.
It came from the Jersey State Bank whose slogan was “Growing Through Service”. More appealing to me was its statement on the back cover that it offered “Complete Friendly (their emphasis) Banking Services”
The match book describes locations in River Edge and Emerson.
In fact, if my memory stands correct, there were two River Edge locations. I believe that the Jersey State Bank was the first bank in the building on Main Street that is home to PNC Bank these days (Does anyone recall how the names changed at the bank over the years through mergers or purchase?).
The other River Edge location (again relying on a fading memory) was on Kinderkamack at Monroe, now the location for Sanducci’s.
According to the stories handed down to me, these were the earliest banks (River Edge Savings and Loan and Jersey State Bank) in town. Prior to that folks like my parents banked at 210 Main Street in Hackensack (People’s Trust) or even where they had banked in the old neighborhood in the city before moving across the Bridge to the country.
Can you add anything to our storyline? Do you remember these banks or any others?
And do you recall the gifts they gave to new depositors (i.e. toasters)?
One final note - as I was attempting to connect the dots from Jersey State Bank to PNC, something interesting happened when I googled “Jersey State Bank” something interesting happened. There was nothing on either bank in River Edge – for that matter there was no mention of any Jersey State Bank in New Jersey. However, entries did surface for Jersey State Bank – one in Jerseyville, Illinois. That institution dates back to 1903.
As to the Jersey State Bank that was once here in River Edge, all I could find was that sewing kit among old family belongings.
