Recalling When A Local Bank Gave Gifts for Starting A New Deposit

Journeys into River Edge

Decades ago, banks, in an effort to get new people to deposit their money with them and open an account, would give away free toasters, alarm clocks, or other cheesy home electrical appliances to new customers, which grew to be an expected perk for opening a new bank account.

Cleaning out from my parents’ belongings, I came across this local bank giveaway.

It was not a toaster but rather a ruler that was functional while reminding us of our hometown banker .

River Edge Savings and Loan was a longtime presence in town – its last location is the bank building now inhabited by the BCB Bank at Kinderkamack between Washington & Christie Avenues.

Somewhere in storage is a cardboard facsimile of that building that the bank offered as a piggy bank of sorts.

Do you remember this bank and do you have any “gifts” from them or any other local bank - be it a ruler, piggy bank or even a toaster ?
