An Easy Guide to Use Oculus Quest Link Without USB-C Port

But unfortunately, the Quest Link requires a USB-C connection to work, especially when you use a headset.

The Oculus Quest is a wireless virtual reality headset that doesn’t need to be tethered to a PC, and neither does it require a phone like regular mobile VR devices. It features six degrees of freedom (6DoF), which allows the device to track the movements (up, down, left, right, forward, and backward) of the user. If you own an Oculus Quest, regardless of the model you use, you’d know that you can use it for gaming on the PC with the help of the Quest Link feature.3

But unfortunately, the Quest Link requires a USB-C connection to work, especially when you use a headset. Although the USB-C has been a spec for a while, players who have a motherboard that’s more than 1-2 years old then their headphones would probably not have the USB-C port.

Many Oculus Quest owners have to experience this limitation when they connect their HMD directly to their GPUs. Note that most of NVIDIA’s RTX lineup models had one USB-C port, and they were capable of working with the Quest Link feature. But now the latest Nvidia RTX 3080 and 3090 cards don’t support a USB-C port, which will leave the Quest Link users hanging in the air.

Use Oculus Quest Link Without A USB-C Port

Observing the lack of a USB-C port, we realized that it is not truly an obstacle, but yes, it does make the procedure a little more complicated. Getting into the USB standards can get a little confusing for some. Although any USB-C port can work with Oculus Link on a PC, you would still have to do some homework to find the perfect alternative. These are the following two methods that you can use to resolve your issue:

USE a USB-A TO USB-C Cable / Adaptor

Gamers are free to use a USB-A to USB-C cable or adapter to connect to the Oculus Quest without a USB port. But know that the Oculus Link requires at least a USB 3.1 connection or later for this method. If you can’t find the USB 3.1, you can look for its alternative names, such as USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, and USB Type-A SuperSpeed.

If the motherboard you are using has been manufactured within the last five years, you’ll be able to find at least one USB 3.1 port in it. This USB connection is usually highlighted with a blue internal connector. You might also find a motherboard with USB ports with teal or red connectors; this equipment will also work fine for the method. Please ensure that the cord and adapter meet the minimum requirements needed for Quest Link. You can also purchase a USB-C to USB 3.0 Adapter and a Powerline USB 3.0 to USB-C Charger Cable for this purpose.

Use Oculus Link Wirelessly

Although this is not an officially supported method, players can still use their Quest Link wirelessly, but you have to ensure that you have a robust Wi-Fi connection. You must have at least a Wireless-AC router. You can also work this method with a Wireless-N router. You will notice that the Oculus Link works wirelessly, and your experience will be as similar as using a cord, but you may experience some occasional hiccups. You will also be required to purchase the Virtual Desktop app for $19.99, but it will only support the Oculus Store version. Its setup procedure is relatively easy, and it doesn’t involve any risks.

So here were the ways to link your Oculus Quest without using USB.
