A Canadian Minute...
With Canada 150 but a few days away; I'd like to honour a Canadian that made a difference.
We've all sat watching television and have been drawn in by a mini history lesson. As Canadians, we often don't appreciate how much history there is in our young nation. I know that my classmates in the UK would often ask me "what do you study in history classes in Canada?"; and I would often sheepishly answer "A little of our history... and a little of yours!".
We all know how great of a nation we are fortunate to live in Canada is. We have given much to the world in the realms of science and art.
So who do I want to recognize as a Canadian who has given back?
Daniel David Palmer, Developer of Chiropractic
DD Palmer was born (March 7, 1845) just down Hwy 401 from here in the little town of Port Hope. There is a statue in his honour in the main park today; put there through fundraising efforts by local Chiropractors years ago.
Why? Well, DD is responsible for developing this profession that I love. This profession that has helped so many people regain their health. His early writings, and his sons writings, still to this day are an interesting read for many in the profession. They chose to look at health in a completely different manner. Healthcare of the day simply looked at the role of sickness and what made people become sick. His philosophy was more along the lines of what made a man keep well. His early writings of most note to me when I perused them while in College stood out to me as being well before his time (the 1890's):
I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, at the same bench was not. Why? What difference was there in these two persons that caused one to have various diseases, while his partner escaped?
By changing the mindset from that of 'sickness centered' to a more 'wellness focused' model DD was really onto something. Today the term 'Wellness' is everywhere. The Wellness Model of health has been taken on by many different types of practice, some using a exercise and diet model, others promoting wellness through different elixirs or pills. Chiropractic, however, has since its inception promoted health from within. Looking at what has changed within the person and how one can improve upon their overall health and well being. Taking a person from a state of 'Dis-Ease' (Not Disease) to a state of 'Ease'.
Without his philosophy in those early days would we be where we are in health today? Maybe. It would take another visionary to come up with a whole new way of looking at the human potential and building on it to give the balance we have now.
There is still a lot of work to be done in regards to improving the health of our society as a whole. A man born before Canada had it's first birthday may have one of the more profound impacts into the shape of healthcare today in Canada, North America and the world.
Happy 150th birthday Canada Still looking great!
