Where do I Even Start?! A Breakdown of How to Start Decluttering.
Not sure what to keep when decluttering? How do you maintain your now-organized space? Your decluttering questions answered!
You know the feeling. You walk into a room – maybe one you use everyday, maybe the dreaded ‘storage room’ – and the task in front of you is entirely overwhelming. Decluttering has been proven to contribute to your wellbeing and happiness – but how do you start? Below we take you through what to do (and what NOT to do) when decluttering!
Deciding What to Keep
When decluttering, its tempting to just throw EVERYTHING away and start fresh – or just ‘organize’ your stuff. But neither of these approaches work long-term. Without really looking at what you’re using on a regular basis and tossing everything, you’ll end up back where you started in six months with a drawer full of measuring tapes and knickknacks. And ‘organizing’ is no better – if it hasn’t stayed organized to this point, it likely won’t going forward!
Do yourself a favour and put the time in to look at what stuff is used. Keep what is often used, what’s new, and what fits.
It’s also a good idea to consider throwing out or donating items that have been in storage for a long time, are broken or stained, and the items you have multiple of (keep the highest quality one!).
Ok, I’ve decluttered. Now what?
Now that you’ve rid yourself of all that unnecessary stuff, it’s time to keep your space in order. Make sure you have a home for everything (the junk drawer doesn’t count!) and that each item makes its way home.
Stop acquiring unnecessary stuff! What’s your go-to shopping splurge? Clothes? Household decorations? Pens?
Before you buy that brand new whatever that you don’t really need (or have the space for!) take a moment to think before you buy. Ask yourself:
- Is this something I really need in my life right now?
- Do I have a specific space for this in my home?
- Will this still be as exciting and useful to me in a week?
