The importance of goal setting

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail

Do you ever feel that you are adrift in the world? You work hard but don’t seem to be getting anywhere?

A key reason you may feel this way is that you haven’t spent enough time thinking about what you want from life, and haven’t set formal goals for yourself. After all, would you set out of a major journey with no real idea of your destination or a map to get there? Most likely not.

Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivation yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality.

What are your dreams? What would you like to create?

The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life and to plan out the course. By knowing exactly what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You will also quickly spot the distractions that can, so easily lead you off track. Can you think of what some of these distractions are in your life?

Start with the big picture, break it down into smaller pieces and then determine what tasks need to be accomplished to get there.

So, what areas could be contained in your goal? Examples could include career, financial, education, family, artistic, attitude, physical, health or pleasure. Spend some time brainstorming these different areas and see if any resonate with you.

As you go through this exercise, make sure you are listing items that you are wanting to create and not what others “think” you should do. It is so easy to fall into the trap of what others want us to do instead of following our own bliss.

From this list we have developed, set smaller goals that can be easily broken into daily/weekly/monthly tasks. Periodically review and update your schedule to make sure you are on track.

Are your goals “SMART” goals?

This represents:

• S – Specific

• M – Measurable

• A – Attainable

• R – Relevant

• T - Timely

Additional tips for setting you goals

• State each goal as a positive statement

• Be precise

• Set priorities around your goals

• Write your goals down (always)

• Keep operational goals small

• Set performance goals and not outcome goals

• Set realistic goals

Challenge yourself to reach BEYOND your comfort zone. Growth happens when you stretch yourself.
