When should I replace my running shoes?
if you feel like your shoes are not as supportive or comfortable as they used to be you may need to replace them.
A frequent question we get about footwear is how worn is “too worn”. As a shoe wears down the materials compress meaning it does not absorb shock or support your foot as well. As a general rule, if you feel like your shoes are not as supportive or comfortable as they used to be you may need to replace them.
Shoes should be replaced every 6-12 months depending on your activity level and how often you use them. This usually equates to about 500-700 km for running shoes, but every person and shoe is a little different. People who are harder on their shoes may have to replace their shoes more frequently as the shoe will wear down a little faster.
There are a couple things to look for to determine if it is time to replace your shoes:
1) Look on the bottom of your shoes
If you see the sole is worn out in any one area or if the shoe no longer sits flat on an even surface it is time to replace them
2) Look at the cushioning
This layer is made up of cushioning or EVA to help absorb shock but over time this will compress showing creases and wrinkles. If you see a lot of creases and wrinkling in this part of the shoe (between the bottom of the sole and the fabric top) it is time to replace the shoe.
3) Look at the mesh/ fabric outsole
Look at the upper part of the shoe. Are there holes where your toes peek through? Is the heel torn apart? Is it shifted to one side?
All of these are signs that the footwear is worn out.
Remember to take a look at your footwear every couple of months to see how worn they are. If you notice that shoes are wearing down faster than they should, they may not be the proper shoe for your foot.
