Sleeping with Back or Neck Pain: Are You Using the Right Pillow?

Here are some tips on what type of pillow is best for your sleeping position - to give you the best night’s sleep possible!

For those who suffer from neck or back pain, getting comfortable before bed can be a real challenge, and pillow selection is crucial

Everyone is different and may have slightly different requirements when selecting a pillow - but there are some basic guidelines to help get you started in the right direction.

Remember: when sleeping you want your neck to stay neutral - in the same position it would be if you were standing up with proper posture.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers should use a thin, soft pillow. When you lay down, the cushion of the pillow should migrate away from the crown of the head. This will push the cushion down towards the arch of the neck and provide the support needed when sleeping on your back.

Bonus: Try using a thick pillow under your knees - this will allow your legs to rest comfortably bent, and put your lower back in a neutral position.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers should use a thicker pillow, as there is usually a larger gap between the bed and neck than when sleeping on your back. The best option is a thick soft pillow with a thin hard pillow underneath - the thin and hard pillow provides the necessary support, while the thick soft one fills in the remaining gap (and is a bit more comfortable). Just make sure the pillow (or pillows) is thick enough for your head to sink in and remain in the neutral position.

Bonus: Try putting a pillow between your legs - this will take the pressure off your back, and help maintain a neutral, supportive position.
