Can a Chiropractor Help With Knee Pain?

Can a Chiropractor Help With Knee Pain?

That recurring knee pain is back - or maybe visiting for the first time. Can a chiropractor help with short term relief and long term recovery?

While traditionally only seen as a remedy for neck and back pain, chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat all areas of the body that are in pain due to muscle, nerve, ligament, tendon, bone, or joint issues.

This big-picture training means a chiropractor can form a holistic treatment plan that takes into consideration both immediate pain relief and long term strategies for keeping your body healthy. This approach will vary depending on the type of knee pain you’re dealing with: acute injury or chronic.

An acute injury or blunt trauma injury is when a fall, tweak, or direct hit causes inflammation and/or immediate pain. The key part in the diagnosis of these injuries is to be sure that there was no structural damage to the meniscus, ligaments, or other structures in the knee.

Acute Knee Trauma

Initial treatment will often consist of decreasing inflammation and pain by using one or more electric modalities, such as laser, ultrasound, and Interferential Current Therapy (IFC). Your chiropractor will then develop a treatment plan for you to help heal the initial injury and mitigate any long-term effects of the injury both on your knee and surrounding structures.

The second type, chronic or pain and/or inflammation that “just came on” without any specific trauma or injury to initiate it, is often the result of a muscle imbalance. This is usually caused by a muscle group overcompensating from a previous injury or another muscle group that is inhibited or weak. Tight quads (thigh muscles) or weak glutes (butt muscles) can cause chronic knee pain.

Chronic or "just came on" Knee Pain

As with an acute injury, initial treatment will focus on lessening the discomfort using electric modalities. Your chiropractor will then work with you to develop a treatment plan to help fix any surrounding muscle weakness, imbalances, or overcompensation going forward.
