BellyUp is a belly dancing studio located in the heart of Burlington where founder, Joharah works to empower women and keep the Middle Eastern tradition alive!

Belly dancing is an art form for females of all shapes and sizes that is both fun and empowering. Since 2006, BellyUp, a Burlington studio founded by Joharah has been promoting belly dancing as more than just a “hoochie koochie/shakey shakey” form of dancing. Joharah loves introducing women to this elevated, beautiful form of dance and dispelling some of the negative connotations that are out there.

Joharah believes that part of the journey is understanding the history and culture of belly dancing in the Middle East, where it is an appreciated art form and a symbol of celebration taught through family members. Within her philosophy, she also encourages women who are interested in joining belly dancing to learn about its historical roots to develop a deeper understanding of this traditional dance. Belly dancing remains, an appreciated tradition performed at events like weddings. Joharah’s goal is to influence this form of dance as a way to let loose, forget about any worries that may be taking over your mind and boost female confidence! Not to mention, dancing is a fantastic skill to have.

Joharah and other belly dancing instructors in North America teach the practice not only for fun and fitness but also to share the benefits of the dance and to allow women to embrace their own beauty. Belly dancing can be fabulously performed by women of all shapes and sizes. While in practice, it is said that insecurities diminish and women’s self-esteem and confidence flourish. The movements of the abdominals and pelvic area allow women to let go and feel the muscles working while enjoying the movement. Belly dancing is not about seduction but rather a social celebration.

Belly dancing also promotes an internal healing process – the appreciation of one’s own body, physically and mentally. Within 3 months of participating in belly dancing, most women claim they have acquired a new mindset which has benefited the way they navigate their day-to-day life. So, what are you waiting for?
