Mother Roasting is a rite of passage for women as they become a mother. A time to protect her from cold or ‘wind’ and support her as she replenishes her energy

What is Mother Roasting?

It is a way for mothers to recover, rest, restore, and replenish lovingly. The early postpartum period is a time when heat, food and wrapping are used to ‘close’ the body and seal up the emotional, spiritual and physical gateways that have been opened for birth.

The traditional mother roasting practices involve warm, nourishing foods such as soups and broths, belly wrapping, gentle massages with heat and warming balms, so the new mother can rest and recover. Bellies Inc Hot Mama Ab Balm uses warming plant-based ingredients to encourage healing of the tissues in the abdominal wall. This therapeutic and restorative balm is ideal to aid in healing the postpartum body and is the perfect companion to the Ab System – a postpartum wrap and restorative exercise program.

Where does it originate?

Mother Roasting has been embraced in many cultures around the globe such as China, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia and Indonesia. Chinese medicine holds the theory that depletion of the body’s resources of Qi and blood are the root cause of low milk supply, postpartum depression, prolapse, fatigue and insomnia after birth.

In North America, postpartum healing is not fully considered. Instead women are racing to get back into their skinny jeans, striving to not look pregnant anymore and they start working on personal bests at the gym around 2 weeks postpartum.

Can it help the physical body heal?

Mother Roasting aids in healing the body as it relieves discomfort and helps to tone the uterus. It helps the mother start to feel rejuvenated and have more energy benefiting circulation. It can boost milk supply, assist in healing diastasis recti, and provide support to the pelvis enabling the pelvic floor muscles to regenerate more optimally.

At Bellies Inc, we invite you to consider the tradition of Mother Roasting. Honour the need to recover, to rest, to replenish and to restore.

What you do in the first 40 days postpartum will set you up for the next 40 years so recover with intention.
