With phones getting more and more high-tech, it's natural that everyone expressed a desire to own one of the best phones there is on the market. However, not everyone has the budget to pay for these phones that are expensive. After all, the more advanced a device, the higher it cost.

What are refurbished phones?
Refurbished phones, also called as "pre-owned,” “reconditioned” or “renewed” phones, are basically new phones that you get at a discount.
These phones are those that were previously purchased and then returned to the manufacturer or retailer due to hardware problems, manufacturing defects or because the customer simply doesn't like it. They are fixed and sold again as a "refurbished" item.

There is really no huge difference between refurbished phones and new phones. It's just that the former is lightly used before it gets to you. Despite working just like new phones, refurbished phones are sold with a discount as they aren't new-in-box items.
Refurbished phones account for a small fraction of industry sales, however, they are a great option for anyone looking for significant savings.
According to a spring 2018 survey, Consumer Reports members have been generally satisfied with purchases of refurbished phones as well as their overall shopping experience.
Among the 3,211 people who reported buying a refurbished phone since January 1, 2016, 82 percent said they were highly satisfied with the product.
The 67 percent of the refurbished phone owners surveyed by the Consumer Reports said they had no complaints.
What you should consider when shopping for refurbished phones?
It's hard to identify the reason why the phones on display have the refurbished status. Is it because of a manufacturer defect? A problem in the hardware? Or was it simply opened and returned to the store?
Here are some things you should consider when you decide to shop for refurbished phones.
- Warranty. Some manufacturers offer a full warranty for refurbished phones, especially to phones with no issues. If the product doesn't come with a warranty, there is a huge chance that there is something wrong with the device out of the box.
- Buy from the original company. If possible, you should buy your preferred device from the company that originally made the phone. Oftentimes the original owner of the phone returned the device for some unknown reason despite it being perfectly fine. Phone manufacturers try to resell the returned items as refurbished phones on their official website, offering a guarantee that they are in good working condition.
- Read the fine print. It is important to always read the fine print on the sale when you're buying a refurbished phone. There are some that have phones marked "as is." reading the fine print will reveal that you can't return or get a refund if the phone isn't working.
- Age of the device. Oftentimes companies will not be selling refurbished phones that are the latest model but instead they are older. Yes, the item is discounted but it's likely due to it being old.
Where to buy refurbished phones?
There are several places where you can purchase refurbished phones, however, not all of them guarantee that the items you buy can be returned or you will get a refund if it isn't functioning.
The following are some of the well-known retailers, smartphone makers, wireless carriers, and companies where you can buy your preferred refurbished phones.
- Apple. Apple is known for its quality customer service. It's the reason why Apple is one of the best refurbished phone sellers. According to Consumer Reports, the refurbished phones sold by Apple, whether online or in its stores, are restored with the same replacement parts used in new models. They come with a new outer shell, a new battery, new cables and accessories; even the white box is new. Apple refurbished phones also come with a standard one-year limited warranty and you can protect them with Apple Care coverage. Apple Store gives you two weeks to return the device if there's a technical problem.
- Samsung. Samsung actively sells refurbished Galaxy phones on its website at a significant discount. The company promises restoration to the original condition which includes a detailed, top-down inspection of every feature and function. Samsung offers a one-year warranty, new headphones and a charger.
- Gazelle. Known as one of the best places to buy refurbished phones. Gazelle refurbishes and sells phones it buys from consumers. You can return any phone you buy on Gazelle within 30 days of purchase and get your money back. Even though it lacks a formal warranty, Gazelle has a solid reputation for offering high-quality products at great discounts. It offers the last few years of popular devices from Samsung and Google, including the latest iPhone models. While Gazelle has a small diversity of brands, it has a great selection within the most popular brands.
- Amazon. The world's largest online retailer is also a great shop to purchase your preferred refurbished phone. Like Gazelle, Amazon also buys old phones from consumers, paying them Amazon gift cards. The company resells the older phones after testing them and making them work and look like new. Amazon's refurbished phones come with at least a 90-day supplier warranty. The company also grants you at least a month to return the phone if there's a technical problem.
- Decluttr. Refurbished phones sold by Decluttr undergo a 70-point inspection before they are put on sale on its website. Decluttr offers a 12-month limited warranty on all the phones they sell. Apart from buying a refurbished phone from this store, you can also sell your old phones to Decluttr.
Returning refurbished phones
It is natural for consumers to return the goods they bought if there are problems with it. The same could be said for refurbished phones, even if they are not exactly brand new. Normally, you have 14 days to return a device purchased at a store.
Not all places that sell refurbished phones guarantee that the items can be returned or refunded if they’re not functioning.

Returning goods bought online is not that difficult. Here are some steps you can follow to return your refurbished phone.
- Contact the customer support team. You can contact the customer support team of the company or store where you bought your refurbished phone via email or phone. The company or store will then send you a response including instructions on where you can drop the item. There are even some stores here that require no cost in returning the item. However, if you purchased the product from a third-party company, you will need to contact them directly to arrange a return.
- Make sure to remove the password. Before returning your device, make sure your passcode and iCloud account have been removed. FaceID or TouchID, if applicable, should also be removed.
Normally, you will receive a response or email from the store you returned your item to notify you that they received and inspected the returned item. The response will include approval or rejection of your refund, with reason.
Refund for refurbished phone
There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted if applicable, namely:
- Any item not in it original condition; and/or
- The product is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to the store's error
However, if you are approved, the refund will be sent to you via your method of payment. This usually will take one to three working days depending on your payment method.
Prior to sending you the refund, the store will need:
- The original receipt
- Any equipment you brought from the store; including the original packaging and in-box accessories
Consumer rights with refurbished phones
When buying refurbished phones, consumers expect that it will be as easy as buying new ones. They expect that the item they want will be the product that they will be receiving and should live up to their expectations. However, there are still some customers who return the product they have purchased because they are "no good."
Not all consumers receive quality customer experience from refurbished phone retailers. Good thing there are things you can do if you ever find yourself in such a situation.
Here are some of the consumer rights in returning goods.
- Cancellation Rights. According to Consumer Contracts Regulations, you can cancel your order up to days from the day you receive it. You also do not have to provide a reason for cancellation and the retailer has no legal right to request one.
- Right to a Refund. You are entitled to a full refund. The Consumer Contracts Regulations state that you have the right to a refund within 14 days of either: the retailer getting the goods back; or you providing proof of postage.
- Product Quality. The Consumer Rights Act states that you have the right to receive goods that are of a satisfactory quality. This includes refurbished devices purchased from retailers. The refurbished phone should be in reasonable condition, should be fit for the purpose it was supplied, and must match the description provided. If any of the aforementioned conditions are not met, you can make a claim.
You can return a refurbished phone with unsatisfactory quality up to 30 days from taking ownership of it. According to the Consumer Rights Act, this is a 30-day right to reject and it starts the day you take delivery of your refurbished phone, not the day you buy it.
The best way to protect yourself as well as to exercise our consumer right is to buy your preferred refurbished phone from a retailer. This will give you the same rights you get if you bought a new phone.
