What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive, out-patient alternative to surgery for those suffering from many joint and tendon disorders.
The purpose of the therapy is to trigger the body’s own natural healing response. ESWT (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) sends acoustic shock waves into bone or soft tissue reinjuring the area and breaking up the scarring that has penetrated tendons and ligaments. Shockwave Therapy is its own treatment for a lingering injury, or pain resulting from illness. You do not need painkillers with it and many people report their pain is reduced and mobility improved after the first treatment.
How It Works
Shockwave Therapy is particularly good at pain management and elimination. It is becoming more common in physiotherapy. Using a much lower energy than in medical applications, shockwave therapy is used in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions, primarily those involving connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons. There are some tendon conditions that do not seem to respond to traditional forms of treatment. Shockwave therapy is most suited for people who have chronic tendinitis which have not responded to other treatments for tennis elbow, rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis, and calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. These could be as a result of sport injury, overuse, or repetitive strain.
Shockwave treatment is usually done once a week for 3-6 weeks, depending on results. The treatment itself can cause mild discomfort, but it only last 4-5 minutes, and the intensity can be adjusted to keep it comfortable.

What to Expect after a Session
Typically, patients feel less pain after treatment, and are able to resume normal physical activities but you may experience throbbing pain 2-4 hours following the treatment. This throbbing pain may occur for up to 24 to 48 hours. In rare cases, patients may experience temporary skin reddening, pain or worsening of symptoms during the first few days after treatment.
It is important that following shock wave treatment activity levels are decreased for 48 hrs following the treatment.
