Should I do a Facebook Live or post on YouTube?
A question I frequently get asked is, “Which is better, doing a Facebook live or posting a video to YouTube?” Well, the answer is both actually...
Well, which IS better? the answer is both actually, but it’s a little complicated and here’s why.
Both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses, so let’s talk about a few here.
Video sharing on Facebook is at epidemic proportions. People can easily share their favourite ‘cat playing with a ball of yarn’ video in mere seconds. And just as easily, they can share your video ‘5 Things To Think About As Soon As You Wake Up!” to their friends. Facebook can be a powerful tool to get your message out. And that is the main benefit of creating a Facebook live video, there is a built-in audience - people LOVE being on Facebook, and your chances of getting noticed are higher than just publishing a video to your website.
A significant drawback however is, once your video has been published on your timeline or your page, and you publish newer content, that video gets pushed farther and farther down your timeline, making it harder to find. Yes, you can share it again by reposting it to the timeline, but sometimes that can seem spammy or desperate. There is no site index, easily accessible archive or blog repository on Facebook, and if a user tries to search for a video, the get back a confusing list of options. Strike #1…
Another challenge is that search engines don’t see Facebook content and can’t rank or display search results using it. Another reason it’s difficult for consumers of your content to find it after you’ve published it. Strike #2…
The last thing is, Facebook uses reduced video quality, unlike YouTube which lets you broadcast or upload videos in higher resolution. Yes, YouTube does reduce quality somewhat for streaming as does Facebook, but if you begin with better quality, you end up with better quality! Strike #3…
So, I said both are good for videos, but here’s the secret to harassing the power of BOTH…
Use your Facebook lives to promote your upcoming YouTube or audio podcasts, and/or use it as an ‘after show’ component of your podcast. Host a Facebook live a day or two before it debuts, teasing people with the content. If you have a guest on the podcast, link them into a Facebook live, chat briefly about what you’re discussing on the podcast, how much fun you had, how life changing the video will be, etc. As well, Facebook lives allow you to speak about other timely topics in the moment - as you are reacting to trends, world events, upcoming seminars, etc. This enhances your social profile slightly differently than a crafted video podcast.
Debut your podcast on YouTube at a pre-arranged time (make it an event, where you can entice viewers to tune in during the Premiere and even chat on YouTube, offer a giveaway during the show, etc), or host a Facebook live right after the podcast debuts to chat about the show, answer questions that came up while people watched, and interact with the viewers to encourage them to buy your book, sign up for your course or have you be their personal trainer.
YouTube is the number 2 search engine after Google, as and we know Google owns YouTube, so the content is easily searchable and findable! Plus, as you may know, once you set up your YouTube channel it is available 24/7 for people to search, browse and watch all of your content…oh, and easily share it as well! Post your video to YouTube, and you can group your content by creating playlists. If you have different themes on your show, having them in separate playlists allows you to display and share similar content to the desired audience, without them seeing your favourite cat videos lumped in with your ‘5 Things To Think About As Soon As You Wake Up!” life altering video.
Additionally, YouTube supports Digital Rights Management (controlling who shares and what is done with your content), branding (logos, music, subtitles, sponsor images, etc), subscriptions (users can easily subscribe to your channel if they find it interesting and are notified when you publish a new video), stats and analytics (how many people have seen a video, how long did they watch, where were they from, etc, which is important info for any sponsors you may have for your show), and the big one - Monetization. If you have enough people watching your videos, YouTube will cut you a cheque! I personally am aware of some YouTubers that can get a nice chunk of change monthly…and then there are the YouTube gamers that make MILLIONS of dollars yearly for their content. That does not happen with Facebook lives.
One small downside, which really isn’t a big one is that people must venture out of the comfortable confines of Facebook/Social Media to view your content. But, we make it easier for them to find it and view by simply sharing our YouTube videos on social media. As well, ever gone down the YouTube rabbit hole? You watch one video and before you know it, you’v watched your favourite band play a concert, learned how to replace a toilet, and discovered a very cool recipe for Vegan tacos.
YouTube allows you to publish evergreen content…content that will be there ‘forever’, findable and shareable for existing and new ‘fans’/clients.
Facebook allows you to publish ‘in the moment’ content…content that will last a lunchtime, but can easily draw eyeballs to your mission and convert people to fans/clients.

- Can go ‘live’ but may be a smaller audience
- You have to embed your videos on social media
- Some people might not actually use YouTube
So, create AWESOME content for YouTube and promote the hell out of it via Facebook Lives!
