5 Things You Should Know About Jesus Christ's Faith | Steve Munsey
Steve Munsey is the Senior Pastor of Family Christian Center in Munster, Indiana. He is the author of Jesus of Nazareth.
The Bible has much to say about faith in Christ and its significance in a believer's life. But let us look at five things that will encourage your heart. Keeping these in mind will also provide you with discernment against many wrong ideas about faith in our world. They are not in any particular order of importance, and there is likely another set of things you can learn about faith down the road.
1. Jesus is the object of saving faith.
We can believe in many things, but none of them will result in any eternal good except this one. We must have faith in Jesus Christ. He said, "I am the resurrection, and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even when he dies..." (John 11:25). We must believe in Christ, the one spoken of in the Scriptures, for anything to be good.
The Christ in whom we believe must not be a Christ created by us, but rather the true and living one, who came and lived a spotless life, was crucified, and rose from the grave, as recounted in the Bible. God is exactly who He claims to be. "I AM WHO I AM," God told Moses.
2. God Gives Us Faith In Christ As A Gift
This is a fundamental truth that is taught in the Bible. Understanding this reality will give the child of God a wealth of wisdom and discernment. The kind of faith that leads to salvation is a gift from God. A person does not and will not have faith until God grants it to them. "For it has been granted to you that you should not only believe in but also suffer for the sake of Christ..." (1:29) Philippians We find everywhere that we believe in Christ because of God's grace.
When it comes to Apollos, Luke writes, "When he expressed an interest in crossing to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to wish him well. When Jesus arrived, he substantially aided those who had trusted by grace..."
3. The Only Way To Have Faith In Christ Is To Hear God's Word With Power
"Faith comes through hearing and hearing of Christ's words." (Romans 10:17) The word of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ, is the only tool God uses to transmit the faith to a person. No amount of worldly reasoning, knowledge, facts, or eloquence can persuade an unbeliever to believe. Ironically, God selected the one medium that all men reject, the Bible, to instill faith in a person.
God's Word plus God's Power equals faith in God.
When the hearer receives the word of God on its own, it does not result in faith in Christ. There is no faith in Christ as a result. Who do you suppose decides when God's word becomes powerful? If you believe in Christ today, it's because God utilized the power of His word to reach you. It's very incredible!
4. Salvation And Justification Come From Faith In Christ
When God gives a person faith, two things happen immediately (among many others). They exist in a person who is given trust before uttering a single word or performing a holy act. Godly words and behaviors will follow, but they are saved and justified once a person has faith.
According to Pastor Steve Munsey, a person's trust in God saves and justifies them regardless of their actions. You were saved and justified the moment He instilled confidence in you. It's fantastic!
5. Faith In Christ Leads To Belief In God's Word
Because God is the author of our faith because He only uses God's word to produce it and because it is the Holy Spirit's power that makes it effective in us, and because the Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture, once faith is provided to us, we will trust God's word to be true. The same Holy Spirit who now verifies that Jesus Christ is LORD also confirms the accuracy of the word He authored.
Given that the Bible is our only source of information on Christ, His death, and His resurrection, consider that there is not a single example of someone who sincerely believes in God but does not believe in His word in all of Scripture. A trait of someone who does not believe is that they do not believe God's word is entirely accurate.
