What is a Podcast, and why would I want one?
From Wikipedia: “A podcast is an episodic series of digital audio files that a user can download in order to listen..."
“A podcast is an episodic series of digital audio files that a user can download in order to listen. Alternatively, the word "podcast" may refer to the individual component of such a series or to an individual media file.
Podcasting often uses a subscription model, whereby new episodes automatically download via web syndication to a user's own local computer, mobile application, or portable media player.
The files distributed are in audio format, but may sometimes include other file formats such as PDF or EPUB. Videos shared following a podcast model are sometimes called video podcasts, vodcasts or vlogs.”
A great definition, but I would add ‘videocasts’ to that list. Any questions so far?

Let’s face it, traditional media like TV and Radio are suffering a bit. There is a lot of competition these days for eyeballs and ears. If you are in business to make money or promote a cause, being invited to appear on a tv or radio show is big - I call that ‘earned media’, where you ascend to a level where people invite to be live to share your opinions. I like to think of podcasts as ‘manufactured media’, you control the narrative and publish content to rise above, demonstrate your media savvy, become a magnet for attention, thereby attracting those earned media invitations. It becomes part of your digital marketing initiative!
I would also point out that podcasting is an ‘on demand’ technology, very similar to Netflix. Netflix is a blend of movies and tv shows, that allow users to watch content when they want, for as long as they want, and pick back up if they need to take a break. And, just like you get notified on Netflix when there’s a new episode of your favourite show, subscribers to your podcast get notified as soon as you publish a new episode. You don’t have to tell them where to listen/watch, you don’t have to post anything, they are notified and they can click on the included link and start watching or listening immediately. Magical!
“What Are Podcasts Used For, and Why Would I Want One?’
Podcasts have many applications and uses, such as:
- Digital Marketing
- Lead generation
- Build trust and relationships
- Religious services
- Demonstrate your skills as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)
- Lead to public speaking engagements
Market your latest product or service, promote your upcoming appearance at a conference or event; create a cooking podcast to demonstrate your skills and recipes; interview your mentors and heroes, as everyone is looking for exposure; record company meetings and share them with global employees; record your religious services and distribute them to the congregation either as a reminder of a service, or for members that are unable to travel; build trust with new clients and relationships with existing ones, by demonstrating your acquired knowledge as an SME in your chosen field; and finally podcasts can show, especially video podcasts, what an effective and engaging speaker you are!
“Who Would I Know That Has a Podcast?”
Here’s a sampling of some well-known people that have their own podcasts:
- Oprah Winfrey
- Alec Baldwin
- Russell Brand
- Michael Rapaport
- Snoop Dogg
- Kevin Smith
- Shaquille O’Neil
- Jillian Michaels
- Joe Rogan
- Bill Burr
- Conan O’Brien
- Will Ferrell
- Alan Alda
- Adam Carolla
These people created podcasts WHILE they were doing other things, as they recognized the incredible value and benefit from controlling their own narrative. If you're not controlling YOUR media message, who is?!
