Eat better. Beat the 'Tax Man'.
What? Eat better and save money? That's impossible.
I was having a great conversation with a patient yesterday that motivated me to write a quick blog.
We were discussing all the different 'diets' out there and there merits and drawbacks. We discussed the keto diet, gluten free, pescetarian, Eating for your blood type; the list goes on and on. It's confusing for many folks and I always try to simplify things where and when possible. In order to simplify things to patients in the past I have always stood by the saying to eat things without a barcode on them (Yes.... I know there are little barcodes on the fruit and veg now!).
But... she had a great way of not only eating healthy... but also saving some money!! I know... sounds crazy.
You've likely heard similar recommendations to mine about barcodes, or eating only from the outside of the store and to stay away from the inside aisles where all the cookies and other delights hide.
This is a bit of a play on that.
Try to see how low you can get the tax portion of your grocery bill. That's right... go by the taxes on your grocery bill.
Well... fruits and vegetables are not taxed. Prepackaged foods and snacks are. So in essence, the lower your taxes on your bill the better the food in your cart is bound to be! Instead of paying the tax man extra on unhealthy things... you keep the money in the pocket of your soon to be too large pants. Win-win, right?
It's not a perfect system; as we all need to buy some things from the store that taxes apply to... but try to set yourself a goal of keeping taxes below $5, $10, $15 and see what happens.
Let me know how it plays out for you!
