Finding the Silver Linings
In a year of so much grey area, the silver linings shine even brighter. Jessie, owner of Edmonton SW WP Creations shows us how!
This year has been almost indescribable for so many people. Mostly because none of us have ever lived through something like this, so we can't find the language to really capture what it is we're all feeling. One thing is certain, however, and that is through it all, there have been some definite silver linings. For me, purchasing a WP Creations franchise territory is one of them.
My name is Jessie and I am the current owner of Edmonton South West WP Creations. I am a mom of 2, a daughter who is 2 years old, and my son who is 4 months old. I'm currently on maternity leave from my position as a Pre-k Kindergarten teacher for children with special needs, juggling life with a toddler and a baby! Being a teacher is something I have always been passionate about, but when I became a mom, my priorities shifted a bit and I struggled with being away from home for long hours, which only doubled when I had my second baby.
I, much like many other franchisees, was a client and customer. I purchased life casts of my daughter from another location in Edmonton when she was still open. And of course, fell in love with my shadowbox. I remember thinking at the time of my appointment, what a neat opportunity that is to be able to work at home, and create this incredible gift for others. Jump ahead to when my son was born just 4 months ago, I wanted to get a matching shadowbox to my daughter's and there was no longer a location open in my surrounding area.
Realizing that if I had a need that couldn't be met, other families are probably feeling the same way. I ended up travelling out of town to get it done, that's how much it meant to me, but what if I was the one who was able to fill the need for other families? Not to mention, introduce these keepsakes to people who do not yet know WP Creations. And so, I thought about it, and then jumped at the chance.
Since then, as I have been getting ready to open, I have received incredible support from Head Office. I approached the president & CEO, Jamie Berube, when I was feeling a bit (OK a lot!) overwhelmed initially. My husband works incredibly long hours in his own business and I was balancing a toddler, a newborn and a brand new business! She, as any fellow mom would be, was very understanding. Jamie helped me make a plan and so far it's been great. I've also received support directly from other women in this company and look forward to connecting with the rest of the team.
Part of what makes working with the WP Creations team so amazing is that we've all walked in each other's “mom” shoes. And although we each have our own stories and our own experiences, there is a common understanding of what it means to work at home, run a business, take care of your family and keep your sanity! I have slowly been learning to accept help (not an easy task sometimes) but with a circle of support as big as WP, how can I not?!
I still have over a year left in my maternity leave. During that time I plan to bring this business to new heights in my community. My plan is to make connections with other local businesses, connect with mom groups and expand brand awareness through networking as well as social media. I look forward to growing my skills, learning even more about myself and being able to spend time with my kids while they're still so young.
Being a teacher is something I never want to give up. I will return to teaching one day, as working with children is where my heart is. In the meantime, I will enjoy this time with my children and helping others make memories of theirs. I am just so grateful for the opportunity to be in a position where I can do both!
I will continue working with kids and their parents, helping them make memories that they can put on display and pass on to their children one day. I will continue getting excited every time I open a life cast mould and then seeing a keepsake come together. And I will do my best to work this business and create something very special here in Edmonton.
If we've learned anything from this year, we never know what tomorrow will bring and making the most of our memories has never been more important!
