New Delhi: Former Deputy Governor (LG) of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. The Finance Ministry has officially informed this. GC Murmu will take oath on Saturday (August 8) at Rashtrapati Bhavan. GC Murmu will replace Rajiv Maharishi. Rajiv Maharishi was appointed CAG in the year 2017. His tenure lasted for three years.

GC Murmu resigned from the post of former Deputy Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday (5 August). Murmu’s resignation came on a day when most of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution granting special status to the (erstwhile state) Jammu and Kashmir have been completed for a year.

GC Murmu is counted among very close officers of Narendra Modi. When Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Murmu served as his Principal Secretary. He was the Secretary in the Ministry of Finance at the time of his appointment as the Deputy Governor.

GC Murmu, a 60-year-old former IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, took over as the first LG of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on October 29 last year. Murmu, a 1985 batch IAS officer, resigned because he was about to get a position at the Center.

After the resignation of GC Murmu, Manoj Sinha, the future Deputy Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, arrived in Srinagar on Thursday (6 August).
