Journeys into New Milford

New Milford's history is tied to the Hackensack River. It is also connected to the railroad. But too many of my vintage (post World War II), it is the bus that represented transportation.

There was the Red & Tan (now Coach USA) with the 21 - back  then a regular schedule of buses to Washington Heights, and later express buses to the Port Authority. Later a rush hour variation was added to the Boulevard.

Then there was the Inter City bus route in town. Inter City was best known for routes connecting plavces like Paterson, Fair Lawn, Ridgewood, Passaic and Maywood to New York (168th Street and 41st Street). But locally there was the Number 50 that dates back to the eariest bus routes in the area. It was truly local - New Milford at its heart - running to Oradell from Hackensack. It has an "extended stop" at Bloomingdales.

It was affectionately referred to as "The Brown Bomber".
