Notwithstanding Reports of its demise, Leafs-Canadiens Rivalry Endures

A Journey into Hockey
Clearly, it is not what it used to be – back in the days of the Rocket, Teeter, Beliveau, Kelly, Bower, Worlsey, Imlach and Blake.
But Toronto-Montreal in hockey is not just another game.
There is too much historically and culturally to this match-up.
You may decline to use the word “rivalry” – though I think it still applies.
The cities remain competitive and there is so much that has occurred between the clubs.
Yes, I must admit that after 50 years I am actually pulling for the Leafs. They have paid their price.
I figure if the time has come for the New York Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians – all once perennial losers – to win, it must be time for the Leafs too.
So, I’ll make a deal – if I pull for the Leafs to be competitive, you folks from Hogtown will not oppose the reintroduction of the Expos.
OK ?
Finally, you say Leafs-Canadiens means nothing ? Hers is why it still matters, at least to some of us.
